Greek cyber crime unit says 10 individuals indicted for fake SMS’s ordering recipients’ military mobilization

Greek Police’s (EL.AS) cyber crime division this week filed charges against 10 individuals in the country in relation to the sending of fake SMS messages in the summer of 2020 ordering recipients to present themselves at their nearest police precinct to receive military-related mobilization papers.

According to officers in the division, the suspects claimed the misleading messages were part of a hoax done “for laughs”.

The messages fraudulently claimed to emanate from Greece’s national defense ministry or by Greek Police.

The mass sending of such SMS’s generated press releases by police headquarters and the defense ministry warning citizens against malicious messages.

The cyber crimes unit cooperated with online mass SMS providers, server providers and law enforcement in Cyprus and Bulgaria for several months in order to trace the suspects.
